Grace Lee Whitney
Biography
Grace Lee Whitney, an American actress and singer, worked for more than half a century in radio, stage, music, television and film. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, she started singing on Detroit radio at 14 and later performed in Chicago nightclubs and with touring bands. She made her Broadway debut in Top Banana in 1952 and repeated her stage role in the 1954 film adaptation. Her movie work included Some Like It Hot (1959), A Public Affair (1962) and Irma la Douce (1963), in which Billy Wilder cast her as Kiki the Cossack. She played Janice Rand in the original Star Trek TV series, and she later returned to the character in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991). Her last screen role was in the documentary The Captains (2011). She died in 2015.

Whitney made her Broadway debut at the Winter Garden Theatre in Top Banana in 1952, playing Miss Holland opposite Phil Silvers and Kaye Ballard.
A role that slipped away
Whitney was in eight of the first 15 episodes, and then the show let her out of her contract. The stated reason was that her character got in the way of Captain Kirk's romantic storylines.
Big break
In the mid-1970s, DeForest Kelley spotted Whitney waiting in an unemployment line and told her that fans at fan conventions had been asking about her, so she came back to the Star Trek franchise.
