David Canary
Biography
David Canary was an American actor known for Bonanza and All My Children. A native of Elwood, Indiana, he was raised in Massillon, Ohio. Although the Denver Broncos selected him in the 1960 AFL draft, he chose acting and served two years in the Army. He had a semi-regular role on Peyton Place before gaining wide notice in 1967, when he appeared in Hombre (1967) and played Frank Gusenberg in The St. Valentine's Day Massacre (1967). David Dortort cast him as ranch foreman Candy Canaday on Bonanza after seeing him in Hombre. His stage work included the Broadway production Clothes for a Summer Hotel and musicals like Kismet and Sweeney Todd. On All My Children he began playing Adam Chandler on New Year's Eve 1983 and added the role of his twin Stuart the following year; that work brought him five Daytime Emmy Awards among 16 nominations. He retired from full-time acting in 2010.

A change of course
In the inaugural 1960 American Football League draft, the Denver Broncos picked Canary. In a 2004 interview, he said he thought they were out of their minds, since he weighed 172 pounds, was not very fast, and could not catch a pass.
A role that slipped away
A contract dispute between Leonard Nimoy and Star Trek's producers led Herb Solow, Robert H. Justman, and Gene Roddenberry to draw up a list of possible replacements for Mr. Spock. Canary was among those candidates.
Early training
Canary studied singing through the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Cincinnati, and in 1960 he was awarded a bachelor's degree in music.
Big break
Canary was cast as Candy Canaday on Bonanza after its creator and producer, David Dortort, saw him in the film Hombre.
