Bob Denver

Biography

Bob Denver was an American comedic actor whose career was rooted in television. Born in New Rochelle and raised in Brownwood, Texas, he made his television debut in 1957 and played the beatnik Maynard G. Krebs on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis from 1959 to 1963. He then took the title role in Gilligan's Island, the sitcom that ran from 1964 to 1967 and later found a long life in syndication, and his performance as the bumbling first mate became the one he was most remembered for. He returned to the character in the television reunion movie Rescue from Gilligan's Island (1978), and among his other films were Who's Minding the Mint? (1967), Did You Hear the One About the Traveling Saleslady? (1968), and High School U.S.A. (1983). He also starred in other television comedies and replaced Woody Allen on Broadway in Play It Again, Sam, earning praise from critic Clive Barnes.
