First role
Anderson Silva made his professional debut in 1997, and that first appearance resulted in a pair of wins for him.
A first
On 26 August 2001, Silva faced Shooto champion Hayato Sakurai in Japan. A unanimous decision after three rounds made Silva the new Shooto Middleweight Champion and the first person to beat Sakurai, who had gone undefeated in 20 fights.
Big break
Silva made his UFC debut in June 2006 against unbeaten Chris Leben and knocked him out 49 seconds into the first round.
A role that slipped away
In 2002, a UFC 36 bout with Matt Hughes, the welterweight champion at the time, was set for Silva, but he chose to sign and compete for PRIDE Fighting Championships instead.
A change of course
At Pride 26, Silva lost to Daiju Takase, who had four wins and seven losses. After that defeat, Silva felt demotivated and considered quitting MMA, but Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira convinced him to keep fighting.
