Plot summary
Sarah Huttinger writes obituaries and wedding announcements for The New York Times. She is engaged to Jeff Daly, a lawyer, but she is unsure about getting married, and the two travel to Pasadena, California, for the wedding of her younger sister Annie. Sarah confides her doubts to her grandmother Katharine Richelieu, who mentions that Jocelyn, Sarah's late mother, had gone to Cabo San Lucas a week ahead of her own wedding. Aunt Mitsy says Jocelyn spent that time with Beau Burroughs, a prep school classmate, and that Beau knew Charles Webb, the author of The Graduate. Jeff works out that Sarah's parents wed just under nine months before she was born, and Sarah wonders whether Beau is her father. She flies to San Francisco, where Beau, now rich and successful in Silicon Valley, is giving a speech.
