Plot summary
Alex teaches yoga and Anna works double shifts as a medical nurse. They are expecting their first baby and have a month to find an apartment they can afford. Anna is estranged from her father, Commander Reiker, a Swiss Army officer who owns an empty country cottage meant for his retirement. He offers it to them on one condition: Alex must complete a military stage under his command. Reiker's own problem is that budget cuts and restructuring threaten to shrink or close his unit, and he needs recruits badly. Alex, a pacifist and house-husband, seems more likely to be discharged than to help. The pact between the two men puts pressure on Alex and Anna's relationship.
