Plot summary
Robert Pujol presides over the umbrella factory in Sainte-Gudule that was founded by the father of his wife, Suzanne, and he treats the workforce with contempt. In 1977 the employees strike for better working conditions, and Robert, who goes to confront them, is taken hostage. Suzanne turns to Maurice Babin, Sainte-Gudule's Communist mayor, once a union leader and a lover of hers in their youth, to negotiate for her husband's release. Babin then challenges Robert about company money spent on a car and other luxuries, and Robert has a heart attack. With him hospitalized, Babin persuades Suzanne to run the factory and to negotiate with the workers herself.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- François Ozon's film version of Potiche came about partly because the producers Éric and Nicolas Altmayer had asked him to make a biographical film about Nicolas Sarkozy, and partly from his own experience following Socialist candidate Ségolène Royal during the 2007 presidential campaign.
- Ozon added Suzanne's political career entirely himself; in the original version of the story, it ended when Robert returned to the factory.
