Plot summary
Timothy Dunphy is a high school senior in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, in 1974, living with his widowed father and his younger brother Jackie, who uses a wheelchair. Tim and his friends spend their days smoking marijuana at the water tower, and a poker game is under way at the house when the boys return for a bong that Jackie tries to pass off as a musical horn. Driving home through the smoke, Tim rear-ends a police car. One of his father's poker players uses his influence with a judge, and Tim's sentence becomes parole on one condition: he must graduate from a Connecticut boarding school or serve a year in jail. There he meets the dorm master, Mr. Funderburk, and Jane Weston, a student at the nearby sister school.
