Plot summary
Hannah Swensen runs the Cookie Jar, her bakery and coffee shop, and is weighing the two men who court her: Detective Mike Kingston, whose wife Lydia died recently, and dentist Norman Rhodes, who is ready for a commitment that Mike is not. Then Melanie Quinn, a college friend of Mike and Lydia, moves to town at Mike's suggestion and opens the Magnolia Blossom across the street, with her sister Vanessa backing the shop and promoting it hard. The new bakery draws customers away from the Cookie Jar. One evening Hannah finds Melanie shot in the Magnolia Blossom kitchen, and the case turns toward Hannah, leaving Mike to keep his distance and stay impartial. She asks Norman for help.
