Plot summary
Tripp Spence, a widowed lawyer in Virginia, filed false bankruptcy claims while his wife was dying, and the IRS investigation closing in on him makes criminal charges a certainty. He takes Derrick, his 13-year-old son, and leaves the state for Las Vegas. A corporate connection supplies fresh identities for them both: Tripp becomes Glen Simon Ryan, Derrick becomes Michael Ryan, called Mickey, supposedly newly arrived from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The invented paperwork takes a year off Derrick's age, which means another Little League season instead of the one the sudden move cost him. Glen looks over the local leagues, then talks Tony, coach of the strongest team, into a private tryout by telling the Fort Lauderdale story. Mickey's pitching wins Tony over and a place on the team. Glen starts seeing Patty, who works at Mickey's school.
