Plot summary
Ten-year-old Mike McCormick remembers Madison, Indiana, in the summer of 1971. The Ohio River town was once a busy port but has fallen on hard times, and families are leaving. Mike's father, Jim, an air-conditioner mechanic, once drove the Miss Madison, the hydroplane the town itself owns, until a 1961 crash ended his racing career. By 1971 he heads the team. The American Power Boat Association picks Madison by lottery to host the Gold Cup, the circuit's biggest race, but the town must raise a fifty-thousand-dollar deposit it does not have, and the twelve-year-old Miss Madison needs repairs the crew lacks the money and expertise to make. Mike's mother, Bonnie, wants Jim to put the family first and leave town.

- Madison opened the 2001 Sundance Film Festival to a standing ovation and then vanished, because the distributor that picked it up went out of business. MGM finally released it worldwide on 22 April 2005, making it the last film the studio ever put out as an independent company.
- Jim Caviezel plays a real racer: Jim McCormick drove Miss Madison in 1966 and from 1969 to 1971, then raced his own boat until a serious injury. Members of his actual pit crew appear as characters, and crewman Tony Steinhardt turns up in the film himself as a fan.
- Jake Lloyd shot his scenes in 2000 and gave up acting the following year, so Madison stands as the final film of his career to date.
