Plot summary
After her mother's death and her father's remarriage, Mary Bedford is sent to a boarding school for girls, where she shares a room with two older students, Paulie and Tori. The pair pull the shy newcomer into their lives, taking her running in the mornings and calling her Mary Brave once they hear her mother has died. From a window at night, Mary sees the two kissing on a roof and understands that they are lovers. Paulie defends Tori when a math teacher humiliates her. Running one day, Paulie finds an injured falcon and trains it. Boys from a nearby school turn up, and Jake Hollander makes clear he likes Tori, who says she would rather stay home than go to her brother's party. Mary befriends Joe Menzies, the gardener, and helps him on the grounds.
