Plot summary
Two reptilian aliens land in the California desert and destroy a green-skinned man who carries a laser cannon on his arm, then leave behind the weapon and a pendant. Teenager Billy Duncan wakes; his mother leaves for Acapulco without him. Kathy Farley's grandfather warns him away from her, two deputies hand him a speeding ticket, and Chuck Boran and Froggy harass him. Alone in the desert, Billy finds the cannon and the pendant, and the weapon fires only while he wears the pendant. On their spacecraft, the aliens are ordered to bring the cannon back.

- The featured alien spacecraft model was designed and built by Greg Jein in two weeks, and the musical score was written in five days by Joel Goldsmith and Richard Band, the first film score either composer had written.
- Laserblast marks the screen debut of Eddie Deezen, who went on to play other archetypal nerd roles in Grease (1978), 1941 (1979), Grease 2 (1982) and Midnight Madness (1980).
- Roddy McDowall portrays Dr. Mellon in the film, and whoever prepared the end credits misspelled the actor's own name, rendering it as "McDowell".
