Plot summary
James Krippendorf is a respected anthropologist. He and his wife Jennifer take their three children, Shelly, Mickey and Edmund, to New Guinea to hunt for a lost tribe. The hunt fails. After Jennifer dies in the United States, Krippendorf's academic work stalls and he raises the children by himself. Facing a college lecture and afraid of being charged with misusing grant money, he invents a tribe, the Shelmikedmu, whose name comes from his children. To back it up, he shoots a fake 16 mm documentary in which the children appear as tribe members, cut with footage of a real New Guinean tribe.
