Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Hope (2013)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Hope is based on the 2008 Cho Doo-soon case, in which a 57-year-old man raped and beat an eight-year-old girl in a public restroom; a court sentenced him to only 12 years in prison, causing outrage in South Korea given the brutality of the crime and his history of violence.
- Prosecutors sought life imprisonment for Cho Doo-soon, and more than 400,000 people signed a petition on the portal Daum demanding capital punishment; the lenient sentence drew such outrage that then-President Lee Myung-bak expressed regret over the ruling at a Cabinet meeting.
- Uhm Ji-won had turned down the film two years earlier, doubting she could handle the intense emotions required to play So-won's mother, but accepted after her close friend Song Yun-ah sent her the script and she felt the movie was meant to come to her.
- Ra Mi-ran won Best Supporting Actress at the 34th Blue Dragon Film Awards for Hope and, in a tearful acceptance speech, told girls suffering as So-won did that it was not their fault and to please have strength.
