Plot summary
Seven months after the publishing house that employed her as a children's book jacket writer closed, twenty-six-year-old Kelly Harding is back in Cedar Grove, Illinois, in her old bedroom, where a poster of the pop idol Dax still hangs on the wall. Her adoptive brother Tim, twelve, enters a contest in Kelly's name without telling her; his wish is for Dax to spend Christmas week in town and sing at the annual Christmas concert, so the town can raise money to reopen its boys club. Dax's manager Jason Chandler arranged the wish to repair the singer's image after a drunken driving incident on Thanksgiving. With no hotel open in the off season, Dax lodges with the Hardings under Reverend Harding's rules: no smoking, no drinking, a curfew, and no touching his daughter.
