Plot summary
Griffin is divorced and lives in a Manhattan flat while his former wife and their sons keep the family home in Westchester. His oncologist reports that the disease has moved through his chest and that a year or so remains to him. He begins a novel and sits in on a psychology course on death and dying at New York University, where he strikes up a conversation with Phoenix, an assistant dean. She smiles but holds him at a distance, and only after some hesitation does she come on a date. The two goof around, stay up all night to watch the sunrise and take on almost childlike adventures, among them the graffiti they paint on a water tower. Griffin tells her nothing of his illness, and Phoenix keeps her distance even as she warms to him.
