Plot summary

Nora Dominguez studies law without pause while her sister Mary spends her days shopping, and the two of them share a Beverly Hills house with their father, a man from East Los Angeles who never pushed his daughters to embrace their Hispanic side. At the reading of his will the sisters find themselves bankrupt, and they also learn they have a half-brother, the child of an affair years earlier. He and his wife Olivia buy the house and let the sisters stay, until Olivia proposes the basement. Nora and Mary leave for their aunt Aurelia's place in East Los Angeles. Nora quits law school for work as a legal clerk, and Mary returns to college, where she meets the wealthy instructor Rodrigo, while Bruno, a neighbor of Aurelia's, admires her from a distance.
