Plot summary
Garrett, Ned Freed's boss on an outrageous cable show, keeps pressing him to put more shocks into the scripts he writes. At home in New York, Ned and his wife Jeannie are raising two sons: Jonah, who has come out and hopes to attend a high-school prom for gay students, and eleven-year-old Ethan, who is anxious about nearly everything. Jeannie sets her own work aside to care for her father Ernie Freed, whose poor health and drinking bring him from Detroit into their house. The marriage is already strained when Garrett pairs Ned with Robin, an unattached and uninhibited colleague, to rewrite a script.
