Plot summary
In 1858, Django is chained with other slaves and marched across Texas by the Speck brothers. A German named Dr. King Schultz, a former dentist who now works as a bounty hunter, stops them: he needs a man who can identify the Brittle brothers, and Django can. Schultz buys him, frees the other slaves, and offers him his freedom, seventy-five dollars of the reward and his horse. Django's own wish is to recover Broomhilda, his wife, who was branded and sold to another owner after the two tried to escape. Schultz takes him through the winter, training him with a gun and in the manners of a free man. Their search carries them to a plantation near Gatlinburg, where Django passes as Schultz's valet and asks after the brothers.

- Leonardo DiCaprio cut his left hand for real when he smashed a glass during the phrenology dinner scene, but stayed in character while bleeding, and Quentin Tarantino kept the take in the final film.
- Kerry Washington insisted that the lashings in her whipping scene really hit her back, and she spent time barely clothed in the coffin-size metal "hot box" before filming to make her character's confinement feel real.
- Will Smith turned down the title role of Django, saying it "wasn't the lead" and was "not for me", after Michael K. Williams and Idris Elba had also been considered.
- Kevin Costner dropped out of the role of Ace Woody because of scheduling conflicts, Kurt Russell was cast instead and also left, and the character was then merged into Walton Goggins's Billy Crash rather than recast.
- Franco Nero, star of the 1966 Django, suggested he play a mysterious horseman haunting Django who is revealed in a flashback to be Django's father, but Tarantino rejected the idea and gave him a cameo instead.
- Frank Ocean wrote a ballad for the soundtrack that Tarantino rejected because there was no scene for it; Ocean then published the song, "Wiseman", on his Tumblr blog.
- Composer Ennio Morricone said he would "never work" with Tarantino again after criticizing his use of Morricone's music in Django Unchained, but he went on to compose an original score for Tarantino's The Hateful Eight in 2015.
- Sally Menke, who died in 2010, had edited every Tarantino film until Django Unchained. Fred Raskin took over the editing and earned a BAFTA Award for Best Editing nomination.
