With the help of a German bounty hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner.

Netflix has been the home to quite a few Quintin Tarantino films and Django Unchained is one of his most critically acclaimed. Django Unchained is the story about a slave in the United States two years before the Civil War who turns into a bounty hunter. The film has the classic Tarantino style with incredible dialogue, a unique story and of course some over-the-top violence. The main character Django is played by Jamie Foxx who’s joined by other notable actors throughout the film such as Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and Leonardo Leonardo DiCaprio.

This Tarantino film on Netflix begins as Django is being transferred from one plantation to another after being sold at an auction when he’s unexpectedly rescued by Dr. King Schultz. Django is confused as to why this dentist decided to rescue him until the doctor explains to Django that he’s actually a bounty hunter and needs Django’s help in order to collect the bounty of three brothers that worked on a plantation where Django was a slave. Dr. Shultz tells Django that he’s against slavery, so once Django helps him collect the bounty the doctor guarantees that he’ll give Django his freedom. A bond grows during the journey of the Django and Shultz. When the doctor asks Django what he’s going to do once he’s a free man and finds out that Django is going on a search for his wife that was sold to another plantation, Shultz can’t help but admire Django’s heroic quest and offers to help Django find his wife because Mississippi is dangerous even for a freed slave.

Dr. Shultz makes a deal with Django that if he works with him to collect bounties throughout the winter that he’ll they can then go on a search for Django’s wife, Broomhilda. Django is a natural marksman, but the doctor helps Django master the art of gun-slinging in a classic old western film fashion. After the winter snow melts the two bounty hunters find out that Broomhilda is on a plantation owned by one of the wealthiest men of The South, Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Calvin Candie. Shultz and Django go to the plantation under the persona that they’re looking to buy a slave so they can figure out a way to save Broomhilda. They’re plan is discovered when Calvin Candie’s house slave, Samuel L. Jackson’s character Stephen, realizes that Broomhilda knows Django. This reveal is the climax of the story as Shultz and Django have to save Broomhilda by fighting their way out of the plantation. The film is two and a half hours, but Netflix viewers will be captivated from beginning to end.

Django Unchained began filming in California in 2011 and then moved to locations across the United States for the historic settings needed for the period film. The movie had a total budget of $100 million and managed to gross over $425 million making Django Unchained Quinton Tarantino’s highest-grossing film. The all-star cast that Tarantino was able to sign up for this film also helped the movie be nominated for five academy awards, which is the most one of his films has ever been nominated for. Tarantino won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and Christoph Waltz won multiple awards for Best Supporting Actor from the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs.
