Plot summary
Winchester University is a prestigious, mostly white Ivy League campus where Samantha White, a biracial media arts major, hosts a radio show. In Dear White People she criticizes the racist slights she sees at the school, and she has written a book on the same subject. Sam runs for head of house at the historically black residence hall against Troy Fairbanks, an ex-boyfriend whose father, the dean, presses him toward law school instead of the comedy writing he wants. A reality television producer prefers Sam's story to a show pitched by Coco Conners. The student newspaper recruits Lionel Higgins, a black gay student, to cover Sam and black life at Winchester.
