Plot summary
On the planet Phaebon, a research facility is meant to be controlled and safe until an experiment goes wrong and a virus that turns infected people into monsters gets loose. A distress call goes out, and Commander Steve Krieger, with his robot companion Tinpan, flies to answer it. Their spacecraft comes under attack and is damaged before they arrive. At the facility, Dr. Marissa Salinger, Dr. Emily Stote and Dr. Frank Darden are among the scientists on hand, and the staff tell Krieger the virus is contained. He takes them at their word and turns to fixing his ship. The virus changes the body of anyone it infects, and the people at the lab are the ones left to face it.

- The effects team wanted a monster unlike anything seen before, a task complicated by a three-week shoot. An inner harness was developed so the actor in the monster suit could move quickly, and GM foam and hair inserts were used to show the human-to-monster transformation.
- As with the original Forbidden World, some of the space battle effects in Dead Space were reused footage from Battle Beyond the Stars.
