On a Los Angeles shoot, the New York filmmaker Eddie Israel is directing Mother of Mirrors, a drama about Sarah Jennings, a woman who has turned to Christian faith, and her unemployed husband Francis Burns, who berates her for turning away from the sex-and-drug life they once shared. Eddie presses his two leads hard, hunting the ugly truths beneath the story, and the demands of the shoot carry over into their real lives. His own behavior with his family wears at his marriage to Madlyn, and he and Sarah begin an affair that blurs where the film ends and his life begins.
