Plot summary
In Chicago in 1994, Jolie Fitch is a junior at Steinmetz High who enjoys Dr. Plecki's English class. When Dr. Plecki is offered the job of academic decathlon coach, a position other teachers dismiss, he holds an open call and no one comes. Jolie tells him to recruit the school's smarter students instead, and he signs up seven: Darius, Matt, Paul, Dominik, Irwin, Agnieszka, and Jolie. They study for months before the regional competition, where they face Whitney M. Young, the winner for nearly a decade. Steinmetz places fifth but qualifies for the state meet. Then Matt gets a copy of the state test and Irwin brings it to Dr. Plecki, who argues that using it is the team's best chance. The students agree to write answers on calculators, shoes, and other items.
