Plot summary
Every dollar counts in Preston Waters's household. His father Fred is cheap, and his brothers Damian and Ralph run a business out of his bedroom. On his birthday his grandmother gives him a blank check, and Fred writes it out for $11, too little for the $200 the bank requires to open an account. Riding home, Preston is knocked off his bike by Carl Quigley, an escaped convict who has just left a briefcase holding $1,000,000 in stolen cash with bank president Edward H. Biderman. Quigley shoves a signed blank check at the boy and flees. Preston fills it in for $1,000,000, and Biderman, expecting a man named Juice, fills his backpack with clean money. Preston buys a large house and a limousine service, and invents a wealthy employer named Macintosh.

- Walt Disney Pictures acquired Blake Snyder and Colby Carr's spec script two days after it went out, the duo's representation having sent it in backpacks filled with fake money to executives such as Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy at Paramount and Gale Anne Hurd at Universal.
- Brian Bonsall was 11 years old at the time of filming and Karen Duffy was 31; when the film reached Netflix in the United States in January 2017, Observer's Dana Schwartz said the kissing scene left her “totally grossed out” and WJBQ's Kylie Queen called it “borderline pedophilia”.
- The castle house that Preston buys was filmed at the Pemberton Castle (Fisher Gideon House) at 1415 Wooldridge Drive in Austin, a Texas Historical Landmark that is now owned by the filmmaker Robert Rodriguez.
- Rupert Wainwright was hired as director in his feature debut, having previously made music videos for N.W.A and MC Hammer and the 1991 television film Dillinger, and said the aim was to cater to the same age range as Home Alone.
