Plot summary
Elliott Anderson is a wealthy attorney in mourning: his wife has just been killed in a car crash. He and his late wife had raised Eloise, their seven-year-old granddaughter, on their own from the day she was born, after their daughter died giving birth to her and the child's father, Reggie, walked away. Now grief has Elliott drinking heavily, though he intends to go on raising the girl himself. Rowena Jeffers, Reggie's mother, comes to the funeral and says Eloise should be placed with her, so that her son can have a second chance at being a parent. Elliott refuses her, and a custody fight over the child begins.
