Plot summary
During World War II, Eugene Morris Jerome, a Jewish teenager from Brooklyn, is drafted and sent to Keesler Field in Biloxi, Mississippi, for basic training. He sets himself three aims: to lose his virginity, to become a writer and to survive the war. In a journal he notes his impressions of the other draftees, whose views clash with his. Sergeant Toomey, who has a steel plate in his head from a wound, imposes arbitrary rules and harsh punishments.
