Plot summary

After his wife dies, Jake Barnes moves his children, Jessie and Sean, to Alaska, where he flies supply runs over the mountains instead of the airline routes he once worked. In the same wilderness, the poachers Colin Perry and Mr. Koontz cage a polar bear cub they intend to sell. Jessie and Sean find the cub at the poachers' camp and set her free, and she follows them. When a storm brings Jake's plane down near Devils Thumb, the children grow frustrated that the authorities are doing too little, so they set out to find him themselves, crossing the Gulf of Alaska by kayak while the poachers trail them.
