Plot summary
Harry Compton, a naive young man, loses his job at a bank and, needing work, agrees to become a Soviet spy. His assignment is to take the Avalanche secret file from Sir Reginald Dumfrey and to obtain sensitive NATO information about military mobilization. The operative is clumsy, and he comes to rely on the instinct of Penny, a ravishing but somewhat dumb dressmaker who offers to help him. The pair roam the French countryside for secret rendezvous, pursued by bad luck and accumulating one blunder after another. MI6 has learned of the operation, and the two must avoid counterintelligence agents and distrustful communist operatives.
