Plot summary
Matt Sullivan shares a San Francisco apartment with his roommate Ryan and works at a dot-com company, still fixated on his ex-girlfriend Nicole, who broke up with him. His preoccupation causes him sexual dysfunction with other women, a problem he describes to his brother John, who is studying to become a Catholic priest. When he learns Nicole is engaged, he vows to abstain from all sexual stimulation for the forty days of Lent. On the first day he clears his apartment of temptation and reminders of her. At a laundromat he meets Erica Sutton, a stranger he cannot bring himself to speak to. Ryan and Matt's coworkers open a betting pool on how long his vow will last.
