Plot summary

Willie Higgins, who runs a gun store in Woodhaven, keeps calling the police about occult activity in the area, and the chief sends Lou Garou to look into it. Garou, an alcoholic cop who sleeps through his shifts and drinks at Jessica's bar, dismisses the first report. A second call brings him to a ceremony where occultists are preparing to sacrifice a reform-minded politician. He is knocked out and wakes in his own bed the next morning with a pentagram carved into his stomach. His hearing and sense of smell sharpen, and his wounds close almost at once. As he works the case, he surprises Jessica and the officers who had written him off.
