Plot summary
François Forestier is a shy student from a lower middle class family, working toward his baccalaureate at a boarding school in southwest France in 1962. He talks with his friend Maïté Alvarez mostly about movies and literature. Her mother, Madame Alvarez, teaches French at his school, and both women are communists. At the wedding of Pierre Bartolo, a former pupil of Madame Alvarez, François and Maïté meet Serge, the groom's brother and a classmate of François. Henri Mariani, an Algerian-born exile, joins their French class.
