Plot summary
Sixteen-year-old Poppy Moore lives in Malibu with her widowed father Gerry and her sister Molly, and is used to getting whatever she wants. After she damages the belongings of Gerry's girlfriend Rosemary, he sends her to Abbey Mount, a girls' boarding school in England, hoping something there will change her. Poppy wants only to be expelled and sent home. Kate, a girl in her shared bedroom, befriends her, the headmistress Mrs. Kingsley refuses to be shocked, and the head girl Harriet makes it clear she is not welcome. Harriet also treats Freddie Kingsley, Mrs. Kingsley's son, as her boyfriend, and he is off-limits to the students. Detention and lacrosse practice fill Poppy's days while she looks for a way out.
