Plot summary
At the end of the Pleistocene, ice and open grassland stretched across North America, Europe and Asia. Mammoths, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, giant sloths and cave bears lived on plains that resembled today's African Serengeti. Humans shared that world, hunting the giant animals and hunted in turn. Two finds stand out. Lyuba, a female woolly mammoth calf some 40,000 years old, came free of melting Siberian permafrost, among the best-preserved mammoth mummies known. Zed is a Columbian mammoth skeleton dug out in 2008 from beneath a Los Angeles parking lot beside the La Brea Tar Pits. Computer-generated images rebuild that world, with filming in the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone, Alaska and the Northern Great Plains, and the film asks what a warming climate may mean for today's large mammals, elephants, bison and tigers among them.
