Plot summary
Far from Moscow, in a Russian provincial town, Olga, Masha and Irina Prozoroff and their brother Andrei long for the city they left behind and measure the life around them against it. Their father, who once commanded the local army post, is dead, and officers from that garrison supply what society the household has. Olga teaches and supports the family in the house that was their father's. Andrei brings home a bride, Natasha, a girl from the provinces who begins to arrange the home to suit herself. Masha, though married, starts a dalliance with Vershinin, an army colonel whose wife is ill.
