Plot summary
Peter Derns is a recently divorced father who works as an executive for a baked goods company in Portland, Oregon. He has just been released from a clinic where he was treated for paranoia. On his first day back, he finds the company has been taken over by a major food conglomerate that is making cutbacks. His supervisor, Charlene Towne, demands a complete report on a new product the following day. With his assistant, Lance, unavailable, the company assigns him a temp worker, Kris Bolin, a young Stanford graduate.

The Temp's original climax, filmed by director Tom Holland, had Kris's hand chopped off by machinery and her body incinerated in a bakery oven; test audiences found it too gruesome, so Paramount ordered a new ending and pushed the release back to shoot it.- Live footage of a real basketball game between the Portland Trail Blazers and Golden State Warriors, attended by stars Timothy Hutton and Faye Dunaway at the Portland Memorial Coliseum, was used in the finished film.
