Plot summary
Bernard Milan, second-in-command of France's counter-espionage, wants to supplant his chief, Louis Toulouse. A smuggler arrested in New York claims the drug trafficking he is accused of was a mission ordered by the service, and the resulting bad press falls on Toulouse, who cannot prove Milan gave the order. Toulouse lays a trap he lets Milan overhear: his assistant Perrache will meet a master spy at Orly airport in the morning who can expose Milan, but Perrache is secretly told to pick a traveler at random. He picks François Perrin, a violinist who arrives wearing one black shoe and one reddish-brown one after a prank by his orchestra colleagues. Perrin, absorbed in an affair with Paulette, the wife of his friend Maurice, notices little, though Milan's agent Christine is sent to seduce him.
