Plot summary
A book editor and the woman he once loved meet again at Zanzotti's, the Soho Italian restaurant they used to visit. Fifteen years have passed since she left him to marry a successful novelist. He works in publishing and writes poetry in his spare time, without success. The afternoon revives the excitement and the bitterness of their youth together, and the past he has kept in his mind sits against the present in front of him. The reunion is carried largely by his own poetic monologue, with little spoken dialogue, the incidents of the meal enacted as he describes them.
