Plot summary
Margo Dey pays her way through college with a part-time job at a rural morgue, mopping the floors through the night. Her only living company is George, the night watchman, worn down by grief over his daughter's death. During one shift, Peter and Nan Townsend appear out of the darkness with their frightened daughter Jill and an empty gas can, and Margo helps them recover from the cold. Jacob and his wounded friend Samim then arrive asking for help, and suspicion spreads among the strangers. It becomes plain that something in the building intends to keep them all there, and the group must rely on one another.
