Plot summary
A young man is taken to a children's home in Spain and says he is American. Left alone in an office overnight, he looks through the records and calls sheriff's offices across the United States about missing children; the name Nicholas Barclay comes back to him. Nicholas, thirteen, had disappeared from his family's home in San Antonio, Texas, in 1994, and the family is told he has been found. He phones an agency as a Spanish official to send information on Nicholas, dyes his hair blond and has tattoos matched to the boy's. Nicholas's sister travels to Spain to bring him home; a court declares him Nicholas and a US citizen. Most of the family in San Antonio, his mother above all, welcomes him as her son.

- Bourdin, who turned out to have a long record of impersonating children, fooled several officials in Spain and the U.S. and was apparently accepted by many of Barclay's family members, even though he was seven years older, spoke with a French accent and had brown eyes and dark hair rather than Barclay's blue eyes and blonde hair.
