Plot summary
Pablo takes up his post as Chile's consul in British Ceylon in 1929, carrying the memory of Josie Bliss, the Burmese lover he left behind after their affair turned into obsession. From a beach house near Colombo he walks the shore and attends the gatherings of the colonial Europeans, with only his servant Ratnaigh for company. His solitude ends when Josie appears at his doorstep; she has crossed the Indian Ocean to find him, bringing rice and a bundle of his papers. She turns the front steps of his house into her territory, then leaves as suddenly as she came. Not long after, he notices the pariah woman who empties his outhouse before sunrise, and his attempts to win her attention come to nothing.

- Handagama started to write the script with a romance-based plot, but changed course after realizing that Pablo Neruda had raped a Tamil garbage collector during his visit to Sri Lanka.
- Casting was difficult because the film needed fresh faces who could speak Spanish and look foreign; a Chilean actor was screen-tested first but his dates clashed with the COVID-19 situation, so Handagama chose Luis Romero, a young Spanish actor and poet who knew and loved Neruda.
- Nimal Dushmantha did the film's production plan and built the Ranminithenna cinema village as a model of the old Colombo Fort, while Nonagama was chosen as the scene of the Sakkili community singing.
- In 2018 women's and student movements protested a proposal in parliament to rename Chile's main airport in Santiago as Pablo Neruda Airport, and the opposition was strong enough that the government withdrew the resolution.
