Plot summary

In 1927, an artist named Schweick paints in Room 36 of the Seven Doors, a hotel in New Orleans. A lynch mob drags him into the hotel basement and kills him there. Decades later, Liza Merril inherits the hotel, moves from New York City, and begins to refurbish and reopen it. A worker falls from his scaffolding after he glimpses a woman with white eyes at a window. The bell for Room 36 rings although the hotel has not opened. A plumber, Joe, goes into the flooded basement looking for the plumbing problem.
