Plot summary
Song Woo-seok arrives in Busan in 1978, a former judge whose law career draws sneers from local attorneys because he passed the bar exam without attending university. He builds a practice on real estate and taxation and grows rich. A detective named Cha receives orders to clear Busan of communists. By 1981 Song has fame, respect and a sailboat he hopes to race at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. At dinner with high school classmates he argues with Lee, a journalist who backs the student protests. Soon after, the restaurant owner's son, high school student Park Jin-woo, disappears. His mother Choi Sun-ae searches for close to two months and shuts the restaurant before learning that the boy and other students face a sedition trial. Convinced the confessions against them were beaten out of them, Song agrees to defend them.

- The film was inspired by the real-life "Burim case" of 1981, when 22 students, teachers and office workers in South Korea were arrested without warrants under the authoritarian Chun Doo-hwan regime on fabricated charges of being North Korea sympathizers. Roh Moo-hyun, later the 9th president, formed the defense team with allies including Moon Jae-in, later the 12th president.
