Plot summary
Mid-Tang China, in the Zhenyuan era. The nun Jiaxin took Nie Yinniang from her family when she was ten and made her into an assassin who kills corrupt governors. When Yinniang shows mercy on one assignment, Jiaxin sends her to Weibo, the northern circuit, to kill its military governor, Tian Ji'an, her cousin, and means the task as a test of her resolve. Thirteen years have passed since Yinniang left home. Her mother, Lady Nie Tian, explains that Yinniang and Tian Ji'an were promised to each other as children, until a politically pressing marriage replaced that betrothal and Yinniang was given to the nun. Tian Ji'an governs Weibo independently of the empire and has young sons.
