Plot summary
Johnny Marco, a Hollywood actor, is staying at the Chateau Marmont, a hotel in Los Angeles, while a broken wrist heals in a plaster cast. He drinks, takes pills, drives his car, and spends time with women. His friend Sammy, a fellow actor and childhood friend, drops by. Publicity for his new film brings interviews, photo shoots, and an awards ceremony on television in Italy. His eleven-year-old daughter Cleo visits, and when Cleo's mother goes away, the girl stays in his care. He takes her with him to Milan, where they share a lavish hotel suite, and helps her get ready for summer camp.

- Coppola used the lenses that her father had used to film Rumble Fish (1983) in an effort to give the film a more period look, although it is set in the present.
- In casting the lead role of Johnny Marco, Coppola met with Leonardo DiCaprio, but from an early stage of writing she had her old acquaintance Stephen Dorff in mind.
- Coppola called Stephen Dorff to ask him to read the script on what happened to be the one-year anniversary of the death of his mother, who had encouraged him to expand beyond his villainous roles.
- Kristina and Karissa Shannon were Playboy models, brought to Coppola's attention by a friend, who were told nothing about their characters before being cast as twin poledancers.
- The sound of the phone ringing in one scene was added by the editor, Sarah Flack, to indicate that Marco has been forgotten.
