Tego Calderon
Biography
Tego Calderón is a Puerto Rican rapper and actor who started his musical career in 1996 under the name Tego Tec and was helped early on by Eddie Dee, appearing on Dee's album El Terrorista de la Lírica in 2000. His first album, El Abayarde, reached international success and earned a Latin Grammy nomination, and he joined Dee's 12 Discípulos in 2004. He followed with The Underdog/El Subestimado (2006), El Abayarde Contraataca (2007), and El Que Sabe, Sabe (2015), which won a Latin Grammy for Best Urban Music Album. Calderón began acting with a supporting role in Illegal Tender (2007), then took a lead part in the short Los Bandoleros and a cameo in Fast & Furious (2009). He returned to the franchise in supporting roles in Fast Five (2011) and The Fate of the Furious (2017).

A role that slipped away
Calderón declined parts in Feel the Noise and El Cantante, opting instead for Illegal Tender because he respected its producer. He later persuaded John Singleton to cast him in a comedy as a baseball team's coach, but that film was never made.
First role
Calderón made his acting debut in Illegal Tender, produced by John Singleton. He played Choco, a Puerto Rican gangster, and director Franc. Reyes wrote the character just for him.
Behind the camera
Under the White Lion banner, with Sony Music Latin handling distribution, Calderón started Jiggiri Records. That label went on to put out multi-platinum albums from Zion & Lennox, Julio Voltio and John Eric.

Calderón's El Abayarde was the first solo hip hop/reggaeton album to move more than 75,000 copies in a single week without a major label handling distribution.

Calderon was the first Latin American artist to appear on New York's Power-105, a station he joined during this period of his career.
