Richard Travis

Biography

Richard Travis was an American actor who moved between film and television after earlier work as a radio announcer and a sportscaster. Raised in Paragould, Arkansas, he entered Hollywood through action pictures in the 1930s. His best remembered part was a supporting turn opposite Bette Davis in the comedy The Man Who Came to Dinner (1941), and other substantial roles followed in the early 1940s before his screen career lost momentum. During World War II he appeared with Winged Victory, the Army Air Forces Broadway show. He later headlined the 1947 B movie Backlash, which drew a cult following among noir fans, and appeared in the crime drama Jewels of Brandenburg. Television kept him occupied in the early 1950s, notably as assistant Sheriff Rodger Barrett in Code 3, a syndicated crime series of 39 episodes in 1957. He eventually left acting for California real estate.
