Gigi Lai
Biography
Gigi Lai is a Hong Kong actress who worked under contract to the TVB television channel and was dubbed the Goddess of Beauty by the Hong Kong media. She entered entertainment as a singer, releasing Cantonese and Mandarin albums during the 1990s, then found box office success on screen, most memorably as the innocent, stuttering Smartie in the Young and Dangerous films (1996). Once known for turning down parts that might affect how she looked, she later put the emphasis on acting, and in 2004 she won the TVB Most Popular Actress Award for her portrayal of a scheming concubine in the series War and Beauty. That role helped make her a favorite with viewers in Hong Kong, mainland China and overseas.
