Biography

Akiko Wakabayashi is a retired Japanese actress who became best known to English-speaking audiences as the Bond girl Aki in You Only Live Twice (1967). Born in Ota, she made many films in Japan, especially for Toho, among them the monster pictures Dogora (1964) and Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964), in which she played a mystical princess who could foresee the future. She and Mie Hama had appeared together in King Kong vs. Godzilla (1963) and in Kokusai himitsu keisatsu: Kagi no kagi (1965), footage from which was recut into Woody Allen's What's Up, Tiger Lily? (1966). On You Only Live Twice, Wakabayashi was first cast to play Kissy Suzuki while Hama played Suki, but Hama's struggle with English led them to trade roles, and Wakabayashi suggested renaming her character Aki. She appeared in an episode of Shirley's World in 1971 and made one more film before retiring.

Wakabayashi was originally cast as Kissy Suzuki in You Only Live Twice, but when co-star Mie Hama struggled with English, they swapped roles, giving Wakabayashi the larger part of Suki, which she had renamed Aki.
