Plot summary
Two minor figures from Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, are on the road to Elsinore Castle, sent for by the King of Denmark. Guildenstern is the quicker of the pair, given to wordplay, while Rosencrantz is slower and sometimes muddles their names. As they ride, they weigh fate, memory and language, and a coin Rosencrantz finds lands heads each time he flips it. On the way they meet a company of traveling tragedians and their leading Player. At Elsinore, the royal couple asks the two of them to stay and work out what has made Prince Hamlet so gloomy, and the friends try to follow what is going on around them.

- This was Stoppard's only film as a director, with Richard Dreyfuss as the leading player, Iain Glen as Hamlet, Ian Richardson as Polonius, Joanna Miles as Gertrude and Donald Sumpter as King Claudius.
